Frequently Asked Questions

  • What exactly is coaching?
The International Coaching Federation, a highly respected, global accrediting body for coaching, describes coaching as follows: "Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership."
  • How is coaching different from therapy?
The fundamental difference is that therapy involves a patient-doctor relationship and power dynamic. It tends to be focused on addressing past challenges or traumas, which may be impacting you now. If you are under the care of a therapist or other mental health professional, you may still greatly benefit from coaching as the two modalities often work well side-by-side. It is recommended you let your therapist know that you are working with a coach. Coaching is a relationship of two equals (and it is my coach as coach to ensure that this dynamic remains in place.) One of the ways we ensure this is by me as the coach steering away from advice-giving. In coaching we focus on the present and on helping you create a better future. As a coach I do no possess qualifications to dive deep into your past history to help you address it. If we step onto a topic that I am not qualified to support you with, I may recommend therapy.
  • What topics do people come to a coaching session with?
You can work with a coach on any topic or goal, big or small related to your life. My coaching work focuses on the following topics: Well-being and mindfulness Setting goals and achieving them Time management and productivity Personal and professional transformation Effective communication Managing emotions Leadership development Improving confidence
  • How do I prepare for a coaching session?
It's important to come into the session with a topic or a general goal you want to explore. Later, in a Goal-Setting Session we will further refine exactly what goal you want to achieve in your coaching, but it's helpful to have a starting point. If you're stuck in life and don't yet know what goals you want to achieve we can explore that also. To prepare for the session it may be helpful to: Eliminate distractions in your environment for the duration of the session (pets, noises and disturbances, etc.) Have a drink of water available and something to take notes on. Give yourself time after the session to reflect and process rather than jump straight into the next activity as you may find yourself reflective or tired from the mental work. You may find yourself enjoying deep and pleasant sleep the night you have the session as your mind will be busy processing and connecting what was explored.
  • What tools do you use in coaching ?
The foundational tool of coaching, and one of the reasons that coaching is so powerful, is questioning, paraphrasing and reflection done in an environment of trust, safety, and non-judgment. Be prepared to do the the majority of the talking and to answer many questions. The purpose of this is to invite in new perspectives and mindsets, to challenge your thinking patterns, to connect the dots in your thinking and to help you tap into your own state of motivation and resourcefulness. As a coach I do not give you advice or tell you what to do. I help you explore and find your answers or find the support needed to get those answers. Coaching can involve a variety of other tools such as guided visualizations with your eyes closed. You may occasionally have a reflection exercise to complete at home. We will agree about this together.

Testimonials

I had the honor of being coached by Ania. She is stellar. She masterfully held space for me, bravely asked me deep questions, celebrated my wins, and helped me make a clear plan. I left the session feeling renewed. As someone who has been exposed to many coaches, I can confirm that Ania is one of the best. I highly recommend her!
